New Year, New Hope: New Challenges, New Look
It's been quite a year and certainly not in the way we had expected. As 2020 draws to a close, I wanted to offer a heartfelt thanks from myself and everyone at Guideline Publications. We started 2020 with high hopes for a busy year, full of exciting plans for our portfolio of hobby magazines, new book titles, and looking forward to meeting many of our friends and readers at hobby shows across the United Kingdom, Europe and North America. Then came the pandemic and all that changed. We know how difficult it has been for those affected directly and indirectly by the Coronavirus and its fall-out, as many of you have told us, and we are delighted to have been, in some small way, able to help by providing people with a chance to escape into their hobby and away from the gloom of the pandemic. We could not have done this, however, without the constant support of our editorial staff, our contributors, our advertisers, our subscribers, and readers. David, Chris, Gary, George and Mark, ably assisted by Colin, Jan, Jon and Paul (not to mention our designers, Andy, Lincoln and Mark) have worked tirelessly to bring you the best in hobby publications. Our contributors have sometimes put aside their own challenges and worries to meet our editorial deadlines, while our advertisers and friends in the hobby have supported us throughout what often has also been challenging times for them.

Most of all, however, I would like to thank our subscribers, new and old, whose commitment to Guideline Publications makes such a difference when so many of our usual outlets were closed, and to everyone of our readers who has bought our magazines and books and supported us throughout the year.

We approach 2021 full of optimism for the future and with renewed energy to continue to bring you the very best in hobby publications. We have exciting new collaborations and new titles in the offing and, perhaps most of all, we are excited about attending shows again and meeting the people that make our hobbies so important a part of our lives.

British Railways Illustrated

BRITISH RAILWAYS ILLUSTRATED, now approaching its 30th year and long known by its cheerful acronym 'BRILL'. Colour cover, 56 pages of text and, typically, 60-70 high quality black and white images. There are maps and plans/diagrams in most issues. 'History with a good helping of nostalgia' is its hallmark with some humour thrown in; concentrates on the steam and early modernisation era of British Railways, 1948 to the 1970s (diesel and electric) but also features subjects and themes from the 1930s and the Second World War. Locomotives and locomotive workings feature prominently but there are always items on rolling stock, buildings, bridges, track and signalling as well as human/social aspects. Lively letters pages keep the readership involved.

Modern Railway News

Modern Railway News is the new free digital section offered with British Railways Illustrated and Railway Bylines. The supplement provides a monthly look at various contemporary rail operations presented in the same manner as the magazine content, often reflecting familiar locations, procedures, and equipment, and underlining the continuity of our railway network and allowing fans of the railway as it was to appreciate the diversity and interest that is current today.

Railway Bylines

RAILWAY BYLINES, now in its 25th year. Colour cover, 56 pages of text and, like British Railways Illustrated, some 60-70 high quality black and white images. There are maps and plans/diagrams in most issues. Subject matter is wide ranging and the BYLINES in the title is very deliberate; homely branch lines serving villages and country towns, industrial lines serving mills, foundries, works, quarries, mines and ports, together with their often ancient locomotives and their correspondingly elderly and eccentric stock. Both standard and narrow gauge with occasional Irish subjects. Most frequently portrayed period is the 1950s-1960s before such workings and lines began to disappear, though occasionally earlier eras are covered. Editorial is wide-ranging - buildings, stock, structures, social/human aspects and so on - history/nostalgia with a light touch that matches its often out-of-the-way, off-beat subjects.

Fall of Iron: Light and Medium Boombee Aircraft of WW2 by Gary Hatcher andChris Meddings Fall of Iron is the first in a series of compendium volumes covering military aircraft with a focus on some of the less well-covered subjects.
