Two-time Oscar-winner Jack Lemmon starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? Let's take a look back at some of his greatest movies.

Lemmon won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for "Mister Roberts" (1955). A second Oscar for Best Actor followed for "Save the Tiger" (1973), making him the first person to pull off victories in both categories. He competed six more times for Best Actor throughout his career ("Some Like It Hot" in 1959, "The Apartment" in 1960, "Days of Wine and Roses" in 1962, "The China Syndrome" in 1979, "Tribute" in 1980, and "Missing" in 1982).

He is perhaps best known for his long collaboration with Walter Matthau, with whom he made 11 films (including his solo directorial outing "Kotch," which earned Matthau a Best Actor Oscar nomination). In films such as "The Fortune Cookie" (1966), "The Odd Couple" (1968), and "Grumpy Old Men" (1993), Lemmon's fastidiousness played beautifully off of Matthau's scruffiness. (So close were the two, in fact, that Lemmon died almost exactly one year after Matthau did.)

Sir Anthony Hopkins CBE (born 1937) is a Welsh actor, film director, and film producer. He has received many accolades, including two Academy Awards for Best Actor.
After graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 1957, Hopkins trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and was then spotted by Laurence Olivier who invited him to join the Royal National Theatre in 1965. Productions at the National included King Lear, his favourite Shakespeare play.
In 1968, Hopkins achieved recognition in film, playing Richard the Lionheart in The Lion in Winter. In the mid-1970s, Richard Attenborough, who directed five Hopkins films, called him "the greatest actor of his generation." In 1991, he portrayed Hannibal Lecter in the psychological horror film The Silence of the Lambs, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Monroe's small part in John Huston's crime drama The Asphalt Jungle (1950) was her first movie to garner her a lot of attention.

In 1959, Monroe returned to familiar territory with the wildly popular comedy Some Like It Hot, with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. She played Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, a singer who hopes to marry a millionaire in this humorous film, in which Lemmon and Curtis pretend to be women. The men, on the run from the mob after witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, hide out with an all-girl orchestra featuring Monroe.

'The Misfits' (1961)
The Misfits was Monroe's last completed film. Set in Nevada, this adventure drama reunited Monroe with Huston (The Asphalt Jungle); Monroe starred opposite Gable and Montgomery Clift. In the film, Monroe falls for Gable's cowboy but battles him over the fate of some wild mustangs.

Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland (1917 - 2013), known professionally as Joan Fontaine, was a British-American actress who is best known for her starring roles in Hollywood films during the "Golden Age".
Fontaine appeared in more than 45 films in a career that spanned five decades. She was the younger sister of actress Olivia de Havilland. Their rivalry was well-documented in the media at the height of Fontaine's career.
She began her film career in 1935, signing a contract with RKO Pictures. Fontaine received her first major role in The Man Who Found Himself (1937) and in 1939 with Gunga Din. Her career prospects improved greatly after her starring role in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940), for which she received her first of three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress. The following year, she won that award for her role in Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941). A third nomination came with The Constant Nymph (1943). Gale Sondergaard, an Academy Award-winning actress who played villainesses in 1930's and 40's movies and who was blacklisted after taking the Fifth Amendment before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951, died Wednesday at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 86 years old.

With her velvet beauty, high-arched eyebrows and broad-toothed smile, Miss Sondergaard managed, in her dozens of pictures, to threaten, intimidate and terrorize the biggest stars in Hollywood. After her film debut in the 1936 production of ''Anthony Adverse,'' for which she won an Academy Award as best supporting actress, Miss Sondergaard played roles in which she glowered at stars ranging from Shirley Temple in ''The Little Princess'' to Bob Hope in ''The Cat and the Canary.''

She even managed to frighten Bette Davis, in the 1940 production of ''The Letter,'' playing Herbert Marshall's first wife without uttering a word.
Her villainy became such a trademark that after ''Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman,'' a vehicle was designed for her entitled ''The Spider Woman Strikes Back.''

She was lauded as a beauty with large blue eyes and extremely long, dark hair.

In 1935, still in her teens, Valerie Hobson appeared as Baroness Frankenstein in Bride of Frankenstein with Boris Karloff and Colin Clive. She played opposite Henry Hull that same year in Werewolf of London, the first Hollywood werewolf film. The latter half of the 1940s saw Hobson in perhaps her two most memorable roles: as the adult Estella in David Lean's adaptation of Great Expectations (1946), and as the refined and virtuous Edith D'Ascoyne in the black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949).


In 1952 she divorced her first husband, film producer Sir Anthony Havelock-Allan (1904-2003). In 1954, she married Brigadier John Profumo (1915-2006), an MP, giving up acting shortly afterwards. Profumo was a prominent politician of Italian descent.
